Northern Pike Biology:
Pike like slow streams, shallow and weedy lake structure, rocky structure, plus other waters. These locals provide protection of young pike. Pike are typically solitary ambush predators; they lie in wait for prey and then strike with remarkable vigor. Pike eat mainly fish, but are opportunists that will take whatever that may fall prey. Pike are among the largest freshwater fish and take big prey. Some biologists have suggest that pike optimally forage on prey that are from 45-55% of their body length. They are not very particular. Fishing for pike is highly exciting with their aggressive hits and aerial acrobatics. Northern Pike Baits and Tackle: Try dead baits, lure fishing, and jerk baiting for Pike. Live baitfish works well, if legal; dead baitfish will bring some fish as Pike may locate prey with smell. Dead fish are particularly productive for well fed Pike in the colder season. Pike also use a lateral line system to register low frequency vibrations in following the vortices produced by escaping prey - whirling spinners may mimic this prey. Jerkbaits are also very effective. Big plugs or soft baits are effective when trolling. Spoons with mirror finishes are very effective when the sun is right. When fishing in shallow water for smaller pike, lighter and smaller lures are frequently used. Barb-less trebles are often used for Pike as it simplifies de-hooking. Since they have very sharp and numerous teeth, care is required in unhooking a pike. |
