Salmon species can be fished in freshwater as well as salt. Most salmon species are born in fresh water, but live the majority of their lives in ocean waters. They will then return to the stream where they hatched to spawn before they die. Other species are land locked. The Pacific has several major species including:
  • the Chinook salmon,
  • Chum salmon,
  • the Coho or Silver,
  • Pink salmon,
  • the Sockeye or Red salmon,

  • Lures and terminal: Common lures include spinners such as the Blue-Fox Vibrax or local varieties such as the Limit Out or Kodiak Custom.

In freshwater streams and estuaries salmon feed on and aquatic insects, amphipods, and crustaceans while young, and primarily on other fish when older. Saltwater salmon often feed on other fish and other bait common to an area.

Different Salmon species require different rod and reel setups. Generally, Salmon are big powerful fish that demand a rod with strong backbone, but not so strong that "feel" is lost. All types of rod/reel combos are used including spinning, casting, mooching, and fly.
