The yellowfin tuna, Thunnus albacares, is one of the favorites of recreational anglers. Yellowfin are eating machines who go after squid, skipjack, smaller yellowfin, mackerel, crustaceans, and many other prey. With this appetite, yellowfin can weigh 8 pounds at 18 months and as much as 140 pounds at 4 years. Yellowfin in the 90-100 pound range are common and they can get up to 9 feet long and 400 pounds.,Yellowfin are fierce fighters, often eager to take a hook, and this makes the a fantastic recreational fish. Yellowfin are large, tough fighters and can put high strain on your gear. A common setup is a 50-pound class, two-speed trolling reel such as the Shimano TLD 30 II or TLD 50 II LRS on a beefy rod. Line should be in the 25-50 pound test range at least.

You'll need to use strong leaders and terminal, Use hooks as large as #9/#10 for bait. Lures will be necessarily large to bring in decent size Yellowfin.
