Porgies, Scup, Sheephead and other Porgy Family:There are many types of Porgies in our fishing waters. They are common and can be caught from inshore and shoreline to the deep banks and reefs. Inshore, Scup and Sheephead are probably most popular and prevalent. Jolthead, Red, and Whitebone are more popular offshore. The Pinfish, either pest or baitfish depending on conditions, is of the Porgy family.There are many species of the Porgy. Some of the more important North American Porgies are listed below:
Porgy Rods/Reels, Baits and Lures, Line, and Terminal:Sheephead Rods/Reels, Baits and Lures, Line, and Terminal:On light tackle Sheephead is a thrilling and sporting fish to catch. More commonly, use a medium /medium heavy class rod in the 12 to 20 pound class. Either a baitcast or spinning reel will do with 12 to 20 pound mono line.
