Spanish Mackerel Tackle and Fishing:
Spanish mackerel are a migratory game fish that can be caught from the Yucatan as far north as Massachusetts. They are a shallow water species, preferring sand bottom in 20 to 40 foot depths. They can also be caught deeper on occasions. Spanish mackerel are similar in appearance to small King mackerel (S. Cavalla) and Cero mackerel (S. regalis). All three have a similar shape and coloration.
Some productive baits: Hopkins SpoonsKastmaster'sStingsilversClark spoons and Mackerel Trees are very productive.

Spanish mackerel are aggressive, opportunistic, carnivores. Spanish live on small fish and shrimp and squid. Anchovies, menhaden, alewives, and thread herring are particularly important in many areas. A common recreational method to catch Spanish mackerel is by casting spoons and jigs or with live-bait.
Spanish love clear water and their eyesight is very good. Many anglers have good luck with the using Stingsilvers in chrome or gold and some of the reddish colors. Also, the small Hopkins and Kastmasters perhaps the best and maybe the most common. Use 2 ounce or smaller with a fast retrieve. Spanish may break the water and I try to fish near the top if I can see this happen. This will be double true in the fall and as it cools. Often the same lure that catch Spanish will also be productive for Bluefish
Bluefish:
Bluefish take many things but prefer menhaden, sardines, jacks, weakfish, anchovies, shrimp and squid. Bluefish tend to swim in schools of similarly-sized fish so when you catch one there will likely be others.
Bluefish eagerly take fresh baits. Nylon-haired jig are effective especially with a strip of shiny fish on the hook. Top-water popping lures are very effective. Fast retrieve , shiny spoons or bright-colored plugs, jigs, and fluorescent colored tube lures are all effective. Try:
a Got-Cha Lure if you have not before.
Take care when handling bluefish as they can and will bite.
